Vincent Crane of Atomic Rooster, photo by Godfrey Argent Largely self taught as a teenage boogie-woogie pianist, Vincent developed his considerable talent through the study of theory and composition at Trinity College of Music, graduating in 1964. His early bands, featuring his dramatic Hammond organ against strident saxes reflected the influence of the Late Graham Bond, (a similarly tragic and flamboyant figure…) In 1967 Vincent joined forces with Arthur Brown, a philosophy student with a soaring gospel/blues voice, and a flair for occult psychodrama, acted out with glittering robes in a fiery helmet. Vincent gave musical structure to Brown’s macabre visions and his resourcefulness as an improvisor sustained their legendary performances at psychedelic venues like the UFO Club and Middle Earth. Moreover, Vincent’s skills as an arranger created rich atmospheric textures for their album “The Crazy World of Arthur Brown”. One track “Fire!” became a UK number 1 hit in the summer of 1968.
